Kedarnath Dham – The Lord of Kedar Valley

Nestled in the majestic Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet), Kedarnath Dham stands as one of the most revered shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva in the world. This ancient temple, believed to be over 1,200 years old, is part of the sacred Char Dham Yatra and holds profound significance in Hindu mythology. According to legend, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's blessings to atone for their sins. Lord Shiva, disguised as a bull, dived into the ground at Kedarnath, leaving his hump on the surface – which is worshipped as the main idol in the temple.

The temple's architecture is a masterpiece of stone construction, with massive stone slabs assembled without any mortar, designed to withstand extreme weather conditions including heavy snowfall and earthquakes. The main idol inside is a conical rock formation, revered as Lord Shiva in his form as Sadashiva. The Kedarnath Temple opens annually in late April or early May (Akshaya Tritiya) and closes after Kartik Purnima (October/November) when the idol is moved to Ukhimath for winter worship.

The journey to Kedarnath is both challenging and spiritually rewarding. After reaching Gaurikund by road, pilgrims trek 18 kilometers through breathtaking mountain terrain, passing scenic spots like Rambara, Garud Chatti, and the stunning Bhairavnath Temple viewpoint. For those unable to trek, helicopter services are available from Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi. The trek offers spectacular views of the Mandakini River, cascading waterfalls, and the towering peaks of Kedarnath range including Kedar Dome and Kedarnath Peak.

Best Time to Visit: May to June and September to October offer pleasant weather. The temple remains closed from November to April due to heavy snowfall.

Key Highlights: The Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya behind the temple, Bhairavnath Temple (1 km uphill from main temple), and the breathtaking sunrise over the Himalayas visible from the temple premises.

Yes. For senior citizens, we recommend our premium Toyota Innova Crysta or Ertiga cabs which provide smooth shock absorption on hill curves. For Kedarnath, helicopter or doli/palki arrangements can be made at Sonprayag base.

The best time to visit Kedarnath is from May to June and September to October.

May-June (Summer): Pleasant weather with daytime temperatures around 15-20°C. Nights can be cold (5-10°C). Clear skies offer spectacular mountain views. This is the most popular time, so expect crowds, especially in May.

September-October (Autumn): Clear skies, pleasant days (10-15°C), and beautiful autumn colors. Less crowded than summer. This is our personal recommendation for the best balance of weather and crowd levels.

July-August (Monsoon): Heavy rainfall is common, which can cause landslides and road closures. We generally do not recommend Kedarnath Yatra during monsoon unless absolutely necessary. If you must travel, our drivers take extreme precautions, but be prepared for potential delays.

November (Closing season): The temple closes around Kartik Purnima (October/November). Visiting just before closing can offer snow experience, but temperatures drop below freezing and some facilities may be closed.

Tip: For the best darshan experience without crowds, visit on weekdays and try to reach the temple early morning (4:00-6:00 AM) when the morning aarti takes place.

Accommodation at Kedarnath is limited and basic compared to other pilgrimage sites. Here are your options:

GMVN Guest Houses: Run by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam, these are the most reliable options. Rooms are basic but clean. Book well in advance (2-3 months) through the GMVN website.

Private Guest Houses and Lodges: Several private options are available near the temple. Quality varies significantly. We recommend reading recent reviews before booking.

Dharamshalas: Budget-friendly options run by religious trusts. Very basic facilities, shared bathrooms, no attached restaurants. Suitable for budget-conscious pilgrims.

Camping: Not officially allowed in Kedarnath town. Some camps operate at lower altitudes (Rambara), but this is not recommended due to weather unpredictability.

Important Notes:

  • Book at least 2-3 months in advance for peak season (May-June, September-October)
  • Expect basic amenities – hot water may be limited, electricity may be unreliable, and room heaters are rare
  • Carry extra blankets or a sleeping bag if you feel cold easily
  • Most accommodations offer vegetarian meals only

We can recommend trusted accommodations based on your budget and preferences, but bookings are your responsibility.
