Day-wise Itinerary

10 Days Plan

Your spiritual journey begins as our driver picks you up from your location in Dehradun – whether it's your home, hotel, Dehradun Railway Station, or Jolly Grant Airport. After a brief introduction and luggage loading, you'll depart for Barkot, the base for your Yamunotri Yatra.

The route takes you through the scenic Mussoorie hills, with breathtaking views of the Doon Valley. You'll pass through Kempty Falls and the beautiful towns of Dhanaulti, Chamba, and Nainbagh. The drive offers stunning vistas of the Himalayan ranges, including Bandarpunch and Kalanag peaks on clear days.

En route, we'll stop at restaurants and dhabas serving hygienic vegetarian food (a tradition for the yatra). We recommend carrying some snacks and water as well. The journey includes breaks at scenic viewpoints for photographs and stretching.

Upon arrival in Barkot, check into your pre-booked hotel or guesthouse. Barkot is a peaceful town at 1,520 meters altitude, located on the banks of the Yamuna River. Spend the evening relaxing and acclimatizing to the mountain environment. Your driver will brief you about the next day's trek to Yamunotri.

Overnight stay at Barkot.

Early morning wake-up call around 4:30 AM. After a light breakfast, you'll drive to Janki Chatti (approximately 1.5 hours), which is the starting point for the Yamunotri trek. The drive takes you through the charming villages of Syana Chatti, Hanuman Chatti, and Phool Chatti.

The 6 km trek to Yamunotri begins from Janki Chatti. The path is well-marked and follows the Yamuna River upstream. You'll pass through dense forests of deodar and rhododendron, with the sound of the river accompanying you throughout. The trek takes approximately 3-4 hours depending on your pace.

Trekking Options: For those unable to trek, ponies (horses) and palanquins (palkis) are available for hire at Janki Chatti. We recommend booking these in advance during peak season. Helicopter services are also available from Kharsali (additional cost, to be booked separately).

Upon reaching Yamunotri Dham (3,293 meters), first take a holy dip in the Surya Kund hot springs – the water temperature is extremely hot (around 190°F), so caution is advised. The tradition is to tie rice and potatoes in a cloth and cook them in the Kund as offering.

Then proceed to the Yamunotri Temple for darshan of Goddess Yamuna. The temple, built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri, is a modest but deeply revered structure. Offer prayers and seek blessings for your family's well-being.

After darshan, visit Divya Shila, a rock pillar near the temple that is worshipped before entering the main shrine. Take some time to enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

Begin your descent back to Janki Chatti (3-4 hours), where our driver will be waiting. Drive back to Barkot for overnight stay. The evening is free for rest.

Overnight stay at Barkot..

After breakfast, depart from Barkot to Uttarkashi, a holy town situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. The drive takes approximately 4 hours, passing through beautiful mountain landscapes and alongside the river.

Upon arrival in Uttarkashi, check into your hotel and freshen up. After lunch, visit the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most important Shiva temples in North India. The temple houses a massive trident (trishul) believed to have been installed by Lord Shiva himself.

In the evening, take a peaceful walk along the Bhagirathi River ghats. The river here is pristine and the surrounding mountains create a serene atmosphere perfect for meditation and reflection. Visit the Shakti Temple and Ekadash Rudra Temple if time permits.

Overnight stay at Uttarkashi.

Early morning departure (around 5:00 AM) for Gangotri Dham (3,100 meters). The 100 km drive takes approximately 4-5 hours, but the journey is so scenic that it will feel much shorter. You'll pass through the stunning Harsil Valley, often called the "Mini Switzerland of India" for its apple orchards, deodar forests, and breathtaking mountain views.

En route, stop at Gangnani to experience the natural hot springs – a popular spot for pilgrims to take a dip before proceeding to Gangotri. The thermal waters are believed to have healing properties.

Continue to Gangotri Temple, situated on the left bank of the Bhagirathi River. The temple, built in the 18th century by Gorkha general Amar Singh Thapa, is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The main idol inside is a silver statue of Goddess Ganga.

After temple darshan, spend some time at the river ghats. The view of the Bhagirathi flowing out of the mountains is mesmerizing. If time permits, you can trek to Gaumukh (the actual source of the Ganges) – but this requires an additional 3-4 days as it's an 18 km trek each way.

Near the temple, visit the Submerged Shivling (visible only when water level is low) and the Kedar Ganga Sangam (confluence of Kedar Ganga and Bhagirathi).

After lunch at Gangotri, begin your return journey to Uttarkashi, arriving by evening.

Overnight stay at Uttarkashi.

After an early breakfast, depart for Guptkashi, the base for your Kedarnath Yatra. This is the longest driving day of the yatra, covering approximately 230 km through some of the most scenic mountain roads in the Garhwal region.

The route takes you through Chamba, Tehri, and the Tehri Dam – one of the highest dams in the world. You'll also pass through the beautiful towns of Rudraprayag (confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini) and Karnaprayag (confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar).

We'll make multiple stops for refreshments, photographs, and rest. The journey offers spectacular views of the Himalayan peaks, including Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, and Kedarnath range on clear days.

Upon arrival in Guptkashi (1,319 meters), check into your hotel. In the evening, visit the Ardhnarishwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva in his half-man, half-woman form. This temple is unique and holds great significance in Hindu mythology.

Overnight stay at Guptkashi.

Early morning departure (around 5:00 AM) for Gaurikund (30 km drive, approximately 1.5-2 hours). Gaurikund is named after Goddess Parvati (Gauri) and is believed to be the place where she meditated to win Lord Shiva's affection. The Gaurikund Temple and hot springs are worth a visit before beginning your trek.

From Gaurikund, begin the 18 km trek to Kedarnath (3,583 meters). The trek takes approximately 6-8 hours depending on your pace and fitness level. The path is well-maintained and follows the Mandakini River upstream. You'll pass through scenic spots including Rambara (a ruined village due to 2013 floods), Garud Chatti, and Jungle Chatti.

Trekking Options: Ponies and palanquins are available for hire at Gaurikund. Helicopter services are available from Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi (additional cost, to be booked separately). For helicopter passengers, our driver will drop you at the helipad.

Upon reaching Kedarnath, first take a holy dip in the Mandakini River (extremely cold, so caution advised). Then proceed to the Kedarnath Temple for darshan of the sacred Jyotirlinga – a conical rock formation worshipped as Lord Shiva in his Sadashiva form.

Visit Bhairavnath Temple (1 km uphill from the main temple), which offers breathtaking views of the Kedarnath range. Also visit the Samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya behind the main temple, where the great philosopher is believed to have attained mahasamadhi.

Overnight stay at Kedarnath. (Accommodation at Kedarnath is basic – we recommend booking well in advance as options are limited)

Early morning visit to the temple for Abhishekam and special prayers (if you wish to attend, you'll need to be at the temple by 4:00 AM). The morning aarti at Kedarnath is a deeply moving experience.

After breakfast and final darshan, begin your descent back to Gaurikund (approximately 5-6 hours). Our driver will be waiting at Gaurikund to drive you back to Guptkashi.

Upon arrival in Guptkashi, check into your hotel and rest. The evening is free for relaxation – you've earned it after the challenging trek!

Overnight stay at Guptkashi.

After breakfast, depart for Badrinath Dham (3,133 meters). The drive takes you through Joshimath, where you can see the winter home of Lord Badrinath (the idol is moved here when Badrinath temple closes for winter).

En route, witness the beautiful Vishnuprayag – the confluence of Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers. The road offers spectacular views of the Nanda Devi peak, the second-highest mountain in India.

Upon arrival in Badrinath, check into your hotel. In the evening, take a holy dip in the Tapt Kund – a natural hot sulfur spring believed to have healing properties. It is customary to bathe here before entering the temple.

Visit the Badrinath Temple for evening aarti – the atmosphere is magical with lamps lit, bells ringing, and priests chanting ancient mantras.

Overnight stay at Badrinath.

Early morning temple darshan at Badrinath (the temple opens at 4:00 AM during summer months). After breakfast, explore the nearby attractions around Badrinath:

  • Mana Village: The last Indian village before the Tibet border, inhabited by the Bhotia tribe. Known for its unique culture and stunning views.
  • Vyas Gufa: The cave where Sage Vyasa is believed to have written the Mahabharata.
  • Bhim Pul: A natural stone bridge over the Saraswati River, believed to have been placed by Bhima from the Pandavas.
  • Charanpaduka: A rock with footprints believed to be of Lord Vishnu.
  • Vasudhara Falls: A spectacular 400-foot waterfall, 8 km from Badrinath (requires a short trek).

After exploring, begin your journey back to Rudraprayag. The drive takes approximately 6 hours, passing through scenic landscapes and river confluences. Check into your hotel upon arrival.

Overnight stay at Rudraprayag.

After breakfast, begin your final day's journey back to Dehradun. The drive takes approximately 6 hours, passing through Devprayag – the sacred confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers, where they merge to become the Ganges.

You'll also pass through Rishikesh and Haridwar, with the option to stop for a final dip in the Ganges if time permits.

Our driver will drop you at your desired location in Dehradun – Dehradun Railway Station, Jolly Grant Airport, or your hotel/home.

Your Char Dham Yatra concludes with cherished memories and divine blessings.

  • Capacity: 4 passengers + luggage
  • Best for: Small families, couples, solo travelers
  • Advantages: Fuel-efficient, comfortable for 4 people, easier to navigate narrow mountain roads

Tempo Traveller:

Yes, but with proper planning and precautions. Many senior citizens successfully complete the Char Dham Yatra each year with our help. Here's what we recommend:

  • Consult your doctor before planning the yatra, especially if you have heart conditions, respiratory issues, or blood pressure problems.
  • Choose the right package: For seniors, we recommend starting from Haridwar or Rishikesh rather than Delhi to minimize long driving days.
  • Use pony/palanquin services for the Yamunotri trek (6 km) and Kedarnath trek (18 km). These can be arranged at Janki Chatti and Gaurikund respectively.
  • Consider helicopter services for Kedarnath – a 7-8 minute flight from Phata, Sersi, or Guptkashi eliminates the 18 km trek entirely.
  • Our drivers provide special assistance – extra halts, gentle driving, help with boarding/alighting, and carry emergency medical kits.
  • Acclimatization: We build rest days into the itinerary to allow your body to adjust to the altitude.

Important: Carry all prescribed medications, and inform us of any specific medical requirements before departure.

You should carry the following documents for your Char Dham Yatra:

  • Valid government ID proof (Aadhaar card, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving License) – mandatory for hotel check-ins and any emergency services.
  • Yatra registration certificate – While not mandatory for all shrines anymore, it's recommended to register for the yatra through the official Uttarakhand Tourism website. We can guide you through this process.
  • Medical certificate – Not officially required, but we strongly recommend getting a fitness certificate from your doctor, especially for senior citizens and those with pre-existing conditions.
  • Travel insurance documents – We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and evacuation from high altitudes.
  • Helicopter booking confirmation – If you've booked helicopter services for Kedarnath, carry printed copies of your booking confirmation.
  • Hotel booking confirmations – Especially during peak season (May-June and September-October).

For international pilgrims: Carry your passport and valid Indian visa. Some hotels may require these for registration.

Here's a comprehensive packing list for your Char Dham Yatra:

Clothing:

  • Warm woolen clothing (sweaters, jackets, thermal inners) – even in summer, temperatures at higher altitudes can drop to near freezing at night.
  • Waterproof jacket and pants (for rain and snow)
  • Comfortable trekking shoes with good grip (for Yamunotri and Kedarnath treks)
  • Extra pairs of socks and undergarments
  • Pajamas/night suits for overnight stays

Essentials:

  • Personal medications (carry extra in case of delays)
  • First-aid kit (bandages, antiseptic cream, pain relievers, ORS packets, Diamox for altitude sickness)
  • Sunscreen lotion (SPF 50+) and lip balm – the mountain sun is harsh even in cold weather
  • Sunglasses and a hat/cap
  • Water bottle (preferably insulated to keep water warm)
  • Snacks (dry fruits, energy bars, biscuits) – healthy options to keep energy levels up
  • Torch/flashlight with extra batteries (essential for early morning treks and temple visits)
  • Power bank (charging options may be limited at higher altitudes)

For the treks specifically:

  • Walking stick/trekking pole (can also be rented at Janki Chatti and Gaurikund)
  • Rain poncho (more convenient than umbrella on treks)
  • Small backpack to carry essentials during the trek (leave larger luggage in the vehicle)

Cash: Carry sufficient cash as ATMs may not be reliable or available at higher altitudes (Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi have ATMs, but Kedarnath and Badrinath may not have reliable service).
