Gangotri Dham – The Origin of the Holy Ganges

Gangotri Dham, situated at an elevation of 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, marks the origin of the sacred River Ganges (Ganga). According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed intense penance here to bring the celestial Ganges down to Earth to purify the ashes of his ancestors. The river is known as Bhagirathi at its source, later merging with the Alaknanda at Devprayag to become the Ganges.

The Gangotri Temple, built in the 18th century by the Gorkha general Amar Singh Thapa, stands gracefully on the left bank of the Bhagirathi River. The temple's white stone architecture, with its distinctive shikhara, creates a serene atmosphere that perfectly complements the spiritual significance of this site. The main idol inside is a silver statue of Goddess Ganga, adorned with flowers and ornaments.

A short trek from the temple leads to Gaumukh, the actual source of the Ganges located 18 kilometers away at an altitude of 4,100 meters. The glacier here resembles a cow's mouth (gaumukh in Sanskrit), from which the Bhagirathi emerges. The trek to Gaumukh passes through stunning landscapes including Bhojbasa (a camping site with breathtaking views of Shivling Peak) and offers trekkers the opportunity to witness the raw beauty of the Himalayas.

Nearby Attractions: Submerged Shivling (a natural rock Shivling visible only when the water level is low), Kedar Ganga Sangam (confluence of Kedar Ganga and Bhagirathi rivers), Gangnani Hot Springs (natural thermal springs on the way to Gangotri), and Harsil Valley (known as the mini Switzerland of India).

Best Time to Visit: May to October. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (late April/early May) and closes on Diwali (October/November). Summer months offer pleasant weather, while the monsoon season (July-August) brings lush greenery but occasional road challenges.
